Stefen’s Bookclub – December
Radiance by Catherynne Valente Catherynne's books are notoriously hard to describe, this one especially so. Nevertheless I’ll do what I can. Imagine a world where 1930′s science fiction is an accurate description of the solar system. Bases on the Moon, colonies on other planets, which are basically like Earth with a few quirks. Mars is a red desert wild west, Venus is a water world and there are various colonials and aliens zipping about the solar system. Into this setting…

Stefen’s Bookclub – May
The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin I went back and forth a bit about whether or not to put this one up as a book club book. I think it's a very good book, and I'm pretty sure there's an interesting conversation in it, so it certainly meets that criteria. It is the first book of a series though, so the ending is pretty open and it's quite a bit longer that the books we normally do. But it's also…

Stefen’s Bookclub – August
The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis This is a debut novel, and a bit genre blender. It’s a dynamic thriller that begins with Elka who lives on a remote mountain with Trapper, the solitary hunter who took her in when she was seven years old. They live a simple, self sufficient existence and he has taught her everything she needs to survive. When, against Trapper’s advice Elka travels to the nearby town she sees wanted posters everywhere proclaiming Trapper as…

The Erstwhile by Brian Catling The Erstwhile is the sequel to The Vorrh, which some of you may remember was the focus of a special event and book club back in 2015. Loads of people loved it and have asked me to arrange a special book club for them to discuss it. I've tried to stick it at the mid-point between our usual book club meets. I imagine that folks who want to could read The Vorrh and The Erstwhile…

Special Event – Odd Bookclub Redux
The Cloven by Brian Catling Folks familiar with the store book club will know that we usually have our first meet of the year in February. That's still the case, and the normal book club will be meeting on the first Tuesday of February. In January however, we'll be doing something that throws back to the other book club we used to run. We called it the Odd Book Club and it was dedicated to really strange and peculiar works.…

Meet the Author: Catherynne Valente
You'll find books by Catherynne Valente all over the store, since not only is she a customer and staff favourite, but she also writes in an array of spec fic sub genres. We've also read two of her books for our book club, Radiance and Deathless. Recently…

Book Launch – The Elephant Girl
The Elephant Girl by Chitta Ranjan I’ve been wanting to do some events with local small press and self-published writers for a while now, and the original plan was for that to begin in earnest in 2020. Fate had other ideas however. Still, better late than never. So, on Thursday 14th of January we’ll be hosting a launch event and having a chat with Chitta Ranjan about his book The Elephant Girl. Set among the social and political turmoil of…

Book Launch – Juliet Marillier
A Song of Flight by Juliet Marillier It seems like such a long time since we’ve been able to do a store event so I’m thrilled that on the 31st of July we’ll be hosting a launch event with WA author Juliet Mariller for her new book A Song of Flight. It’s the third in the Warrior Bards series and returns readers to the Gaelic kingdom of Dalriada and an ancient time of magic. We’ll be doing the event in…
