Parable of the Sower
by Octavia Butler

I’ve been thinking about setting another Octavia Butler book for the book club for a while now, but other than Kindred, so a recent re-issue of the Earthseed novels seemed like the perfect reason to stop procrastinating. Parable of the Sower is set in a future world in the process of economic and social collapse and is told through the eyes of a young woman who begins somewhat protected from these facts, though circumstance and a quirk of her own nature soon make them very much part of her reality. This book was originally released in 1993, which makes it one of the more recent dystopian novels that we’ve read. It will be interesting to see what people think of it. And for the curious, and those who like to plan ahead the book for February (no book club meet in January) will be the second book in the series, The Parable of the Talents, which I’ll be saying more about next month.
