Kindred by Octavia E Butler

There is so much to say about this book that it’s hard to know where to begin. First published in 1979 and written by African American writer Octavia Butler, it is the first person account of Dana, a young African American woman who finds herself repeatedly transported through space and time from her home in California in 1979 to pre Civil War Maryland where she finds herself among the slaves that were her ancestors. This book is evocative exploration of power, race and gender, alone and concurrently, in combination and in competition, in the past and in the now. This book has been read and talked about for more than thirty years and while we may be separated from it by time and culture, I think the depth of this book and the diversity of the book club will make for a very interesting evening.
