Stefen’s Bookclub – April
April 7, 2020 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
by Lauren Beukes
I’ve had it in my head to put up a Lauren Beukes book for a while now, so I’m glad that in April we’ll be discussing this one. Zoo City was originally published in 2010 and won the Arthur C Clarke award in 2011. It’s an interesting mix of the modern world, and magic where crime and its associated guilt manifest as animal companions. In one of my favourite films (We’re No Angels from 1955) a character says “If crime showed on a man’s face, there wouldn’t be any mirrors”. This is a world where your crime follows you for everyone to see. They’re also much more than just reminders, as readers will discover. Zinzi is one of those who has been ‘animalled’ and lives in Zoo City, a part of Johannesburg where most of those like her live. She’s also good at finding things, and people, which is why she’s just taken a job that she thinks might make her enough get out of Zoo City forever. Of course nothing about the job is quite what it seems, and what results is a journey into the nature of crime, guilt and forgiveness. I think this one will be fun.
