The Very Odd Bookclub – July

Note:  Venue change, due to Dutry Nelly’s Christmas in July on the same night, we’re now going to meet upstairs at The Generous Squire (lounge area to the left).

On Sunday the 27th of July we’ll be getting together at The Generous Squire to discuss I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison.

This is often cited when the subject of significant science fiction stories is mentioned. Despite this I’ve very rarely seen it on shelves. My attempt to do something about that lead to the discovery that it’s rarely seen in publishers catalogues too. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is actually a short story, and the first of seven in the collection that I’ve managed to acquire. Given that the whole collection is still only about 150 pages, I think we might as well make the discussion about all of them (though I suspect that most of the time will be spent on ‘I Have No….’).

I’ve read a lot about this story and I’ve read other examples of Ellison’s work, but I’ve never actually read this story. I’m looking forward to finding out what all the fuss is about, and then chatting about it.
