Stefen’s Bookclub – October

October 1, 2019 @ 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Native Tongue
by Suzette Hayden Elgin

I doubt that this will come as a surprise to most of you, in fact I think I probably hinted it in the short piece about the book in the last newsletter. This book has been on my ‘want to read for book club’ list for years, but getting copies was a problem. With the recent re-issue it went straight to the front of the list. The premise of the book is that a future human society that wants to interact and trade with various aliens can only do so by using rare women who are universal translators. These women are bred, controlled and little more than prisoners, all for the ‘greater good’. In the place where the retired translators are kept revolution is stirring, but it’s not one that will require or guns. Instead the women, ex translators all, have developed a new language, a women’s language that only they know. With it they intend to remake their world. A fascinating read that I think will be loads of fun to talk about.
