The November book club book is Neuromancer by William Gibson

Tuesday 4^th November, 6.00 pm at Durty Nelly’s.

Neuromancer is often the book that first springs to mind when the ‘cyberpunk’ genre is mentioned. While it was certainly not the first (and I expect there to be a few contenders for that title raised at the book club), it is still a significant book in the evolution of the genre.

Neuromancer first hit shelves in 1984, and while there are plenty of references that show that it is set in a future version of our world, Gibson is very careful to never actually give a date. Thirty years later, I think it will be interesting to look at his version of a high-tech social and political landscape and compare it to the world as it is and the speculations that current science fiction writers have about it. Are we moving closer to Gibson’s vision or further away? Do the massive technological changes that have occurred in the last thirty years make the book less accessible or more?
