Too Like the Lightning

A while ago we read Swastika Night by Katherine Burdekin because I wanted to do a book that was like Nineteen Eighty-four without actually being Nineteen Eighty-four. This month I had a similar thought. I kind of wanted do something like Dan Simmons‘ Hyperion, but new. I think that this one will fit the bill. It’s got the care and attention to language with a slightly archaic style and some interesting philosophical ideas. It’s also a utopian novel, which will make quite a change though opinions may divided on just how good this future is. It’s unfortunately book one of a series, but I think there’s enough resolved in this first book for an evening’s discussion and I’m looking forward to what folks make of it.
